
Doncaster Jazz Orchestra Alumni 50th anniversary big band – directed by John Ellis and Al Wood
Leeds jazz legend, sax player Al Wood joins with Doncaster Youth Jazz orchestra founder John Ellis to being you some of the best big band musicians in the country playing be-bop, swing & all that jazz.
The internationally acclaimed Doncaster Youth Jazz Association (DYJA) was formed in 1973 by John Ellis MBE. Since inception the Doncaster Youth Jazz Orchestra (DYJO) has received numerous Outstanding Performance awards at the National Festival of Music for Youth, the National Jazz Festival in Birmingham, and the Great North Big Band Festival. They were also voted the BBC Radio Big Band of the Year, have performed a record 18 times at the Royal Albert Hall, at the United Nations in New York, Buckingham Palace, Ronnie Scott’s, the House of Commons and the Royal Festival Hall to name but a few. Well known jazz musicians like Reuben Fowler, James Hamilton and Dennis Rollins all learnt their trade with the band. The DJA Alumni band have done a special recording to mark the 50th anniversary of the band. It will be led by founder John Ellis and Leeds multi instrumentalist the legendary Al Wood. This should be quite a special occasion for Big Band fans – don’t miss it!
